Refund Rights

Your rights to a refund

If you were tricked into sending money to a scammer, US rules may entitle you to a refund from your bank. What you can claim depends on when you paid and how you paid.

Which rules cover your payment?

Some sets of US rules require banks to reimburse victims of authorised push payment (APP) fraud. Which one applies to you depends on when you made the payment.

When the bank says no

Banks decline claims they should pay. A fraud gets called a civil matter, a generic pop-up gets called a warning, or a convincing scam gets judged with hindsight. None of those reasons is the final word. Decisions can be challenged and escalated to the Financial Ombudsman Service, and we know where they most often go wrong.
